Pastor Tan’s Sermon 23, November, 2013: Rebuilding Faith

God gave Ezra tremendous favor from Persian king.
Zerubbabel was to rebuild the temple (1-6), Ezra was to rebuild spiritual condition (chp 7-10).
Between these two period, there was a gap of 6 decades.
For Israelites, the most important and urgent thing to rebuild was to restore the worship of God.
Their identity was tied to God Himself. Similarly, our identity is tied to faith in God.

CHC is significant because it is our spiritual home. We are now in the midst of building God’s house.
How was the condition of rebuilding God’s temple back then?

1.) there was much opposition in rebuilding the temple (Ezra 4:1, 4-6).

2.) The rebuilding the temple prospered through prophecy of Haggai and Zaccharia (Ezra 6:14)
Even the prophecy was that the Messiah would enter into the Temple.
Word of God sustained the rebuilding the physical temple.

3.) Ezra restored the teaching of the word of God (Ezra 7:10).

Matt 4:11
The devil left Lord Jesus.
The tempter simply wants us to disconnect from God. We then will naturally sin against God.
At that point in time, hunger shows Lord Jesus’ true nature.
Matt 4:4.
Every word of God. Word of God cleanses filthy things away from our lives.
We should use God’s word to build up, not to tear down.

4.) Erza could then restore the spiritual condition of the people

Matt 13:18-23
The devil is always after God’s word. 4 types of ground:
1.) wayside ground (never start). 2.) stony ground (only start). 3.) thorny ground (start-stop). 4.) good ground (start to completion).

Matt 13:53-58
They were offended at Jesus. He could not do miracle.
They were never-start ground.

1 Kings 17:10-16
She had need. The devil sowed fear of sensible act: to cook and to die.
Yet, the word of the Lord rebuilt her faith.

1 Kings 17:17-24
They had tragedy after tragedy.
She brought her son to Elijah. Elijah prayed and her son lived.
Let’s bring our need to God.

Determination III

I should say I have learned a lot from History Strongest Disciple Kenichi manga.
This manga is not just about martial arts; it is also about life philosophy.
Following are three quotes from a particular karate teacher.
They really inspire me, somehow. Hope they will inspire you too!

For a purchase of at least S$20 in a single receipt, the customer had one chance to spin this fortune wheel.
The ultimate price was: shop for free! The bookstore would give voucher almost equivalent to the amount of purchase in the receipt!

CG Sermon 14, November, 2013: What Giving Really Involves

2 Cor 9:1-2
A chapter on giving.

1.) Giving involves passion.
Giving without passion feels dead. It should pulsate because it means something to the giver.
The passion of the giver will infect other people. It is not about the amount. It is about heart we put into our giving.
Biblical giving isn’t about charity.

2.) Giving involves preparation (v5)
Apostle Paul sent someone else to prepare Corinthian church. King David also prepared much material to build God’s house.

3.) Giving involves promise v6-8
The principle: sow little reap little, sow much reap much.
However, God wants us to be cheerful.
After giving, God will somehow fulfill our needs through other means even when we may have less finance.

Pastor Kong Sermon 16, November, 2013: Regarding Home

God cares for the person.
From individual, God raises up people. God then blesses the place.
With each transition of place, there is a new challenge and new breakthrough.

What does ‘a church as a place’ mean?

1.) A place worthy of the honor of God.
David wanted something glorious for God.
1 Chr 22:5.
The state of the sanctuary, to certain extent, reflects God’s glory.

2.) A place where the altar of God is built.
Noah, Isaac, Jacob built altar whenever they had an encounter with God.
Altar is a symbol of dedication.

3.) A place of revival and reformation.
Nehemiah rebuilt God’s house and revival swept through

4.) A place of vision and dream.

5.) A place of encounter and equipping
Matt 4:10
In church, we have the chance to serve others.

6.) A place where wise stewardship is demonstrated.
David didn’t mean to show off his wealth.
He only planned to surrender to God what already belongs to God.

7.) A place of transformation and testimony for God’s glory.
2 Cor 3:18
We hear testimony from different ones on how God saves

Pledge: promise, covenant, commitment.
Commitment is the foundation for all relationships.
God never forsakes us because He is committed. God makes promise all the time.

1.) Vows are an expression of love.
Bride and groom are looking forward to wedding day because they are going to exchange vow of love.
God loves us and shows us His love in His promise.
When life gets tough, we should return to the vow we make to Jesus.
David made much promise.
Ps 22:25, 76:11.

2.) Vows protect relationship.
Agreement for property, loan and others to prevent future dispute.
Agreement makes us feel secure.

3.) Vows motivate us to act.
Ps 132:1-5.
Making vow is an expression of love. Keeping vow is an expression of commitment.

4.) Vows move God into action. Vow shows we are serious with God.
Commitment should be expressed verbally, tangibly and publicly.
