Loving the Enemies

“Singing cheerful songs to a person with a heavy heart is like taking someone’s coat in cold weather
or pouring vinegar in a wound.

If your enemies are hungry, give them food to eat. If they are thirsty, give them water to drink.
You will heap burning coals of shame on their heads, and the Lord will reward you.”
– Proverb 25:20-22 (NLT) –

Is there anyone who really sings cheerful songs to someone with a heavy heart?
Normally, we won’t do it to a dear friend or loved one.
However, we might do it to someone who irritates us.

If a dear friend or loved one has a heavy heart due to certain difficulty,
we can easily pray for them or help them the best we can.

However, if an irritating person has a heavy heart,
our sinful nature tends to rejoice and says, “Serve you right!”
The verse teaches that such reaction is like pouring vinegar in a wound.
In other words, our sinful nature wants to exact revenge on that irritating person

To certain extent, we can consider such irritating person to be our ‘enemy’.
The verse above teaches that even if our enemy is in difficulty, we must still show kindness to him/her.

Are there people in our lives who have hurt or irritated us?
How do we deal with them especially when they are in difficulty?
Do we rejoice at their downfall or do we love them like God loves the sinners?
