Don’t Meddle In Quarrel

He who passes by and meddles in a quarrel not his own
Is like one who takes a dog by the ears.
Proverb 26:17 (NKJV)

One of the beatitudes is to become a peacemaker (Matt 5:9).
How do we become peacemakers to solve other people’s quarrel without meddling in it?
Perhaps it is better to see it by scenario.

An easy scenario.
Suppose strangers A and B quarrel in a public place and we happen to be there.
We should not meddle there and then unless there is physical violence involved.
Instead, we should stand aside and pray for them quietly.
We can also report to the security if the quarrel gets too long.

A more complicated scenario.
A and B are our friends who can’t get along with each other due to certain reason.
Firstly, we should pray for both parties.
Then, we can approach A or B or both and encourage them to solve their quarrel in private.
If they cannot solve their quarrel in private, then we can encourage them to approach a mediator.

In any quarrel scenario, we should keep praying and maintain confidentiality as much as possible.

Let us not close eyes to a quarrel.
And yet, let us be wise not to meddle in it.
