Living By The Word of God

Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God
Matthew 4:4

A familiar verse.
We live not only by natural food, by also by spiritual food – the word of God.

What happens to natural food when we eat it?
We gain energy and part of the food is incorporated into our body – you are what you eat.

Likewise, when we spend time in God’s word, we receive ‘energy’ and ‘incorporation’.
However, unlike natural food, we will not receive these two benefits unless we act on God’s word.
That is, we need to trust and obey His word.

When we are feeling down, depressed and hopeless, we feel powerless to pick ourselves up.
Nevertheless, as we spend time in His word, we need to trust His promise.
He does care for us. He understands our pain. In fact, He weeps when we weep.
As long as we trust in His promise, we will receive His strength to rise up from the depth of despair.

It is not enough to just know the Bible. Such head knowledge will only make us mere ‘theologians’.
Just because we know many Bible stuffs, it does not mean we live out the word of God.
We need to obey His commandment.
As we obey Him step by step, His word is incorporated into our lifestyle.
As more and more of His word is incorporated into our lifestyle, we become more and more like Christ – who is the very embodiment of the word of God.

Let this hymn remind us to live out the word of God.

Trust and obey, for there’s no other way.
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
