God’s Omnipresence

“Who can hide in secret places so I cannot see them?” declares the LORD.
“Do I not fill heaven and earth?”
Jeremiah 23:24

God is omnipresent, meaning He can be anywhere at the same time.
As the verse above shows, He fills heaven and earth, i.e. He fills the universe.
It is different from pantheism. In pantheistic belief, god is the universe.
However, the God we worship is not the universe itself.
He is the Creator and the universe is the creation. He is distinct from the universe.

Where can I go from Your spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, You are there; if I make my bed in the depths, You are there.
Psalm 139:7-8

We can never escape from Him no matter how hard we try.
Jonah tried that. Didn’t work.
He is ever nearby. In fact He dwells in us.
How does God’s omnipresence affect us?

Be strong and courageous.
Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you.
He will never leave you nor forsake you.
Deut 31:6

Suppose we are facing a huge challenge now. A great difficulty, a raging storm.
We have been trying our best but nothing seems to work.
In such situation, let us still be strong and courageous.
Let us remember the Lord Jesus is still on the boat. He is nearby.
As we put our faith in Him, He will calm the storm.

In addition, we can take comfort in the fact that He never leaves us alone.
Whenever there is suffering, one common cries is the question, “Where is God when it hurts?”
Most assuredly, He sees all the pain we experience as He is present with us in the midst of tragedy.
And certainly He works everything for our good (Rm 8:28)

The LORD sees everything you do.
Wherever you go, He is watching.
Proverb 5:21 (GNTA)

Another aspect we must remember is accountability.
He watches every action we make, every word we speak. We can never hide from Him.
Suppose a pastor stands beside us,
Dare we lose temper easily?
Dare we laze around at work?
Dare we browse immoral website?
Dare we slander others?
In short, dare we sin outrightly in the presence of a pastor?
Certainly we don’t.
All the more we must be careful with our action and words when God is nearby and watches us 24/7!

As we go through the day, let us remember God is forever with us, in us, for us and watches us.
