I Surrender All

I surrender all
I surrender all
All to Thee my blessed Savior
I surrender all

An old song which has been ringing in my mind.
A sweet reminder of what life is all about.

To surrender to God is natural call of every human being.
He is the Creator and we are just creature.
He owns us.

All means all.
We are to surrender all aspects of life to Him.
What are those typical aspects?

Money

The most basic aspect of surrender.
Where our money is, there our heart will be (Matt 6:21).
Money in itself is no evil.
However, if we are not careful, our heart will be enticed with money just like the rich man who did not want to part with his wealth (Matt 19:16-22).
Surrendering money to God ensures our heart is with Him always.
Whatever amount God nudges us to give, we must obey it.

Body

Our body is a gift from God.
Hence, it is a reasonable service to surrender it back to God that He may use it for His work.
Whatever ministry He has called us to do, we must carry it out faithfully.
This is what it means to love God with all our strength.

Achievement

In life, there is a measure of success we can enjoy as God equips us individually with certain strength.
While achievement in itself is nothing sinful, if we are not careful, we can fall into pride.
Surrendering our achievement to God enables us to walk in humility.
In all our success, we must give God the glory.

Sinful habit

We may fall into sin every now and then since we are imperfect.
Nevertheless, we must never sin habitually.
What is that sinful addiction we may have?
We must surrender it to God.
Remember, we are called to be holy for He is holy (1 Pet 1:16).

Hobby

Similar to money, hobby may not be sinful in itself.
However, we need to guard our heart: does hobby now become an idol?
Do we spend more time for hobby than for God?
Surrendering hobby to God means we obey His nudging: when we can enjoy the hobby and when we should fast from it.

Anxiety

There are circumstances which are beyond our control.
When we face uncertainty, it seems our effort is futile. Hence, we feel anxious about future.
Nevertheless, we must always surrender our anxiety to God for He cares for us (1 Pet 5:7).
Remember, our shoulder is never designed to be so broad to carry the weight of the entire universe.
Leave it to God and stop worrying.
After all, living in constant anxiety implies unbelief in the power of God.

Vengeance

When others wrong us, it is natural to demand justice.
This is where we need wisdom.
There are times we need to get to the court to settle justice, if necessary.
But, there are times when we do not need to do so.
Instead, we just need to surrender that sense of revenge to God.
After all, vengeance belongs to Him (Rm 12:19).
In all circumstances, we must forgive those who offend us.

Works and plans

We must always work hard and make plans for future.
As we excel in our work, we will stand before kings, not some unknown people. (Proverbs 22:29)
At the same time, we must always surrender/commit our works to Him (Proverb 16:3).
It means we rely on His strength and wisdom in carrying out our plan and work.

Let’s examine our heart now.
How have we surrendered to Him daily?
